In partnership with Helsinki University of Technology, SHALIN is offering a Kenyan student an opportunity to undertake a 6 months research in Finland on stove technologies.
Renewable Energy and Stove Technologies (REST) Call for Applications
Through a joint innovative partnership, Helsinki University of Technology and Shalin Finland are inviting individuals from Kenya interested in renewable energy technologies to present concept papers and open applications for a Master’s Thesis research in Finland. The research will be conducted within the Product development research unit, within the Engineering Design and Production Department.
The research will begin in January of 2010. The student will focus their research on household to industrial scale pyrolytic stoves and their usability in the global South specifically Kenya and the East-African region.
The application period will begin on 15th/July/2009 – 15th/August/2009.

1. General Requirements for Applications
Students applying for this position must fulfill the following requirements:
• Have completed a Bachelor’s degree in any of these fields; Mechanical engineering, Environmental Technology, Energy Technology or any other field related to the above.
• The student can also be currently enrolled in a local university undertaking a Master’s degree in the same fields. However, students not enrolled in a Master’s programme but have completed a Bachelors are eligible.
• The student should have studied in a local public university. Applicants from private universities or public university parallel programmes are not eligible.
• Prospective students are required, along with their open applications to write a concept paper articulating how this technology and opportunity would benefit the general public, them personally and the environment. The key words for the concept are pyrolysis, innovation, biodiversity, transfer of technology, water, and forests.
The selection process
• Chosen applicants will go through a face to face interview process which will be held in Kenya in the first week of October. The short listed candidates will be informed in mid September.
• The successful candidate will be funded for a period of 6 months when in Finland at a basic salary of approximately 1,800 Euros/month.
• The candidate will be required to sign a commitment form to ensure he/she returns to Kenya after the research period.

3. Work experience, internships, apprenticeships etc if any.
4. On no more than two A4 sized paper, write a concept paper articulating how this technology and opportunity would benefit the general public, you as an individual and the environment.
