Designing Renewable Energy & Efficiency Solutions (DREES)
The DREES is a consortium of energy experts lead by GENI (General Engineering Nature Investments) whose mission is to deliver an ecosystem of quality and affordable energy solutions for the underserved sections of the society focused on individuals, institutions, and enterprises. The partners in the consortium have worked or are working as researchers, in institutions of higher learning, vocational schools, international organizations, renewable energy SMEs, businesses and NGOs. The partners are national, regional and international.
Their unique ecosystem approach delivers a closed loop design that ensures sustainability that closely tracks the social, economic and environmental needs of the clients. While renewable energy is a core focus, the approach crosscuts through agriculture, food and nutrition security, water and sanitation.
DREES develops technical solutions and processes that address the core issues of the target clientele especially the youth. The solutions deliver competencies, develop capacities, and enhance the quality of service delivery while promoting sustainable development.
The consultancy services and technical assistance target the planning, design, deployment and execution of appropriate sustainable solutions for individuals, institutions, and enterprises. This also helps build the framework for incubation of viable business ideas and ventures.
DREES partnership delivers complementary skills that strategically co-create enabling environments where local solutions are tested and scaled in energy, food and nutritional security, systems development, project design, risk management and execution.

A Summary of GENI-DRESS Actions and Activities
A) Proposed Mobile Pelleting System
i. Develop safe high quality briquette products out of human, agricultural & industrial waste sources including pellets.
ii. Develop a safe and consistent briquette-production process
iii. Test product in the market (hotels, households and industries)
iv. Optimise sourcing of input materials in relation to availability and activities of partners
v. Establish a marketing and promotion strategy
vi. Assess financial viability of producing briquettes from human waste and other waste sources
To achieve the above objectives-there is a need to construct a test scale pilot mobile pelleting/briquetting production facility to be used in situ
Due to identified issues- there will be a remodeling of existing pelleting machines to meet the stated objective through:
2. Reconfiguring Pelleting Machine
The pelleting machines in the market have a few limitations-which make them uneconomical to run.
1. The shaft needs constant replacement
2. The system over heat and potentially a risk if not constantly monitored
3. The energy they use is quite high therefore the electricity bills are not supportive of businesses at the BOP
4. The current models are not designed to respond to the spatial distribution of the different forms of feedstock
5. It is difficult to develop sustainable business models based on the state of the art of the technology
3. Specific Process
1. Purchase a pelleting machine
2. Re-engineer and redesign the pelleting machine
Shaft – material
Evaluate and develop dyes that can withstand the grinding action
The energy supply system (install and test an alternative energy system)
Redesign the heating chamber to use an alternative system through heat exchange from a pyrolytic chamber.
3. Test the new system with alternative biomass material including human waste and on farm residue
4. Develop a business model that is sustainable
B) Solar Water Heating
Solar water heating has a huge potential to deliver a solution that meets a human and environmental need in society. By heating water from solar, the SWH reduces the destruction of forests, reduces the energy costs and creates employment opportunity for the many unemployed youth.
SWH is designed to convert the suns energy using simple technology that is easily deployable and transferable.
The training of Solar Water Heating takes a minimum of 23 days. However, under special conditions, a shorter introductory course can be delivered similar to the course DREES just concluded working with UN Habitat in Dar-Es-Saalam.
C) Design Lead Efficiency and Sustainable Housing
Designing and deployment of Energy Efficiency and Closed loop energy supply solutions. Working with County Government to deliver sustainable housing solutions.
D) On Going Technical Solutions
Converting Biomass Material to Energy
Biomass / Organic that has calorific has potential to generate energy from various processes. DREES has been working on appropriate technologies that add value to the materials. One such is the developing of the pellets for energy production focused on waste (organic) including on-farm waste
Biogas from methane
The deployment of biogas systems has been a core activity for DREES. DREES Has just completed building a 52 M cubic Biogas Unit in Vikuruti, in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. The profuse gas needs to be used for other purposes including generating power for the 64 Ha farm.
