A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF SHALIN PROJECTS

MODELS FOR TACIT KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT

For proper planning, architects develop models for the built evironment.

We use the same principle for the unbuilt environment. We work with groups to develop platforms for communicating tacit knowledge. One such platform is the Participatory 3 D Model and GIS using Cybertracker Software.

However, we also believe that without governance, the planning of how to use the unbuilt environment is biased and unproductive. In this regard, the GISEEM project combines ecological knowledge, modern technology and community budgeting to create a vibrant discourse on development at the local level.

TECHNICAL CAPACITY BUILDING

Building the technical skills while delivering a service can improve the enterprise of local people, promote sustainability of a concept and deliver results that are beyond the planned.

New technologies are risky but with potential to drive new sectors in local economies. Very few governments in the Global South are ready to bear the risks on behalf of the local people. It is on this basis that the RESCUE and the STOVE projects are building the capacity of local artisans on renewable energy technologies of biogas, wind and stove technology. The trained artisans will acquire portable skills that are in high demand, schools will gain from the new systems of cooking, while farmers will have increased productivity. NETWORK AND COLLABORATION

If we do not embrace new concepts and ideas with an open mind, we are bound to remain grounded in our good and bad practices. Our environment is alive and evolves with us. Old traditions merge with new ones. New ideas based on our environmental context will always emerge.

At SHALIN we encourage networking and evolution of ideas. But, because of our limited capacity to undertake all what we would like to, we expand our work and activities through collaboration with strategic partners, individuals, organisations etc.

Through the sharing of knowlegde we have been able to carry out OTHER INITIATIVES within this framework.
