Volunteering with us

By the time a volunteer decides to take a position, they have done enough background research and are committed to volunteering.

We want to emphasize on this

1. There are risks involved in any travel, whether in Finland, Europe or Africa. Common sense minimises the risk.

2 We expect the volunteer to be independent and self motivated

3. In most cases, the volunteer might find themselves working on their own and in difficult conditions

4. It is always better to seek a friend or compatriot so that you volunteer as a pair at the same time or allow for time overlap.

5. Cultural sensitivity and appreciation of different cultures is crucial.

6. Part of the learning is in searching for information regarding your country of choice.

7. The part that does not go well is always the most memorable…. Watch this SHALIN ry Video

Current Volunteer Opportunities:

The activities for SHALIN Suomi ry are diverse and you can choose to volunteer abroad or within Finland. Volunteers help us implement our strategies, improves our working relations with our partners in different parts of the world.

Our volunteers have played a key role in developing environmental education programme for school going children in partnership with the Meru National Museums and in defining our strategy in Kenya.

In Kenya our volunteers have specifically been working with Mt Kenya Alternative Development Initiative and Monsoon Energy to develop the Renewable Energy for Sustainable Communities and Universal Ecology (RESCUE) framework.

The RESCUE project has involved background and feasibility studies, which have provided information that will be used in developing the proposal to prospective partners. The idea is to link the provision of Wind generated energy to the technical skills development, computer assembly and general IT development in remote villages and schools. This we feel is a good strategy for concrete action on global warming, climate change and energy sovereignty for local communities.

Besides activities in Finland we are constantly being requested by our partners to support them especially with resources to develop their programmes and implement their activities.
